Hi, I'm Sarah Waddington, a self taught mixed media artist based in the Conwy valley, North Wales. I mainly paint animals and still life in an abstract and whimsical way. I love colour and texture and aim to create images that are joyful to look at.

Really excited to have had my collage accepted to the Art North Wales Bodnant exhibition, which will be displayed in the laburnum arch at the top of the garden for the month of September. The display will have a picture of the art works and of the artists holding their artworks.

James and I had fun taking the picture of me holding it today and we had an ice cream afterwards as a reward for him being my glamorous assistant, chauffeur, and art work carrier for his heavily pregnant but heavily grateful wife.

I’ll be putting the collage up for sale on my website when the exhibition opens.

I sold two paintings to friends this week! Which is very exciting and also very lovely to be supported by people I know! And also kind of special to know that my paintings will go and hang on the walls and brighten the homes of people I care about! 😍 Yay!

Both friends came and had a rummage through my mess of a studio at some point to look at some of my paintings in person so if you’d like to do that all you have to do is ask! Hopefully shop update with some new bits and pieces coming soon!

Sunset Boulder - remembering Dad.

A couple of weeks ago we went on a family trip to the isle of Mull on the West Coast of Scotland. It was a week of glorious sunshine, beach walks with the dogs and lots of time painting/making art. But we also went with another purpose.

My Dad died last September and he wanted his ashes to be scattered on the south side of Loch Buie, where he took his photo ‘sunset boulder’ 15 years ago (picture 2, and the photo picture 1, my rendering of ‘sunset boulder’, is based on).

He didn’t leave a lot of directions as to where that was but luckily he was obsessed with geograph, so the photo was handily uploaded with a grid reference for us to find. We had initially intended to sea kayak to the location but due to me being heavily pregnant we decided this wasn’t an option this time. Instead we planned our walk to the location and had a lovely day with the dogs who would have had to stay behind had we kayaked, walking through what would at any other time have been knee deep bog, but was just mildly soft turf due to the seriously dry spring. We found his boulder, much less impressively lit at mid day, and took some photos of us in front of it, scattered his ashes and ate our sandwiches on the beach, before returning the way we had come. I think he would have liked it.

We spent the rest of the week enjoying our holiday and feeling some relief that we had succeeded in carrying out his wishes so early in the week. I did lots of art, a more restful activity for a pregnant person than constant dog walking, although they certainly got a lot of that too! But did not touch on the subject of Dad’s boulder.

Since I got home though I have been remembering that place and how beautiful it was and treasuring my memories of the holiday, and of him, and our many family holidays to the West coast of Scotland, the most recent with him to Arisaig only a year previously. I wanted to create something to capture that special location, which I will certainly be back to visit and this little collage of his photo is the result.

Painting apples, not really a spring time subject given that the trees are covered in apple blossoms rather than apple fruits, but I was munching my way through one when I started painting and the colours just went that way.

I haven’t painted anything in a while because I’ve been feeling pretty yucky this winter, but the glorious sunshine has worked wonders.

The Blackbird.

Really pleased with how this has turned out. Really quite simple on first glance but so many hints of colours in the wings, and the background. Lots of layers (swipe to see some of them). Feels very autumnal/wintery and the moodiness of the colours suits the ever increasing darkness at this time of year.
