A pair of Hares (right)
Mixed media diptych painting of dancing or fighting hares. This is the right painting.
12 x 24 inches
These paintings were created simultaneously applying interior paints into textured layers. Unlike many of my other paintings, the hares were mostly planned out in my sketchbook in advance, although once the textures were layered up their positions were tweaked to make the most of the existing marks to enhance their characters. Bright oranges and pinks show through a mainly calm green background, and there are a few touches of collage taken from RSPB magazines where I saw the original image of a hare on a simlar green background that inspired me. They could be dancing together celebrating the freedom of life in their fields or fighting as male hares do to compete for breeding rights. Details in soft pastel were added to enhance the bright colours and give higlights and shadows, and the whiskers are white derwent inktense pencil.
